Qualcomm's Snapdragon Satellite technology is set to revolutionize the smartphone industry by offering emergency satellite communication capabilities. During the Mobile World Congress (MWC), the chipmaker announced that phone makers such as Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Motorola, Nothing, and Honor would be bringing satellite communication capabilities to their phones. However, the manufacturers did not provide details about which devices would first have these features or when the companies would launch them.
Qualcomm partnered with satellite service provider Iridium to unveil the Snapdragon Satellite tech at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) last month. The technology enables smartphones to have two-way texting and other messaging applications using satellites during emergency situations. The chipmaker also announced that Snapdragon Satellite would be available across upcoming RF modems and multiple models of 8 and 4 series processors for smartphones.
Francesco Grilli, Qualcomm's vice president for product management, said in a statement, "By incorporating Snapdragon Satellite into next-generation devices, our partners will be able to offer satellite messaging capabilities thanks to a mature and commercially available global LEO constellation, which can allow subscribers around the world to communicate outdoors with emergency service providers, as well as family and friends."
Apple was the first company to introduce satellite-based emergency communication features with its iPhone 14 series in the US and Canada, followed by France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK through Globestar's satellite network. Samsung also recently announced its satellite tech and promised to embed it in a future smartphone. Additionally, British smartphone maker Bullitt announced its rugged smartphone with satellite connectivity a few days before the MWC, while Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek showcased its satellite connectivity solution for smartphones at the event. This technological innovation could provide a solution to remote areas with unreliable network connectivity. With Snapdragon Satellite technology, people in these areas will be able to communicate with emergency service providers, as well as family and friends.
